HW #28

To Yuuki,
I agree with your ideas and your approach towards Morrie's situation. If i were dying i would also want ti take advantage of all the time that i had left however, i woulod still be optimistic. Optimism is a holistic method, like "rest" where one relies on natural methonds to be cured or just continue surviving. Morrie definatly took this idea ion and used it well. He lived up every last moment he had prior to his death. That is what i would like to do as well.
-Rossi

To Ally,
I agree completely. I do not understand why the government is so against it, it will benifit everyone except the health insurance companies, who are not even in the buisness for the right reasons anymore. I found it interesting the point that "Hillary Clinton at one point wanted universal health care but was paid off so she shut up." I found this to be a very powerful and direct example of how the world revolves around money. The insurance companies do not want the people to be healthy they just want money. The same with the government. Now, even the people who have beliefs and attempt to stand for them are unable to, as a result of money.
-Rossi

To Rossi,
Although living basically all my life in the USA, I was born in the carribbean where healthcare was also free. Personally, I've accepted the fact that healthcare is costly even having medical coverage. However, I do believe that not having coverage would be an unbareable expense, so I'm grateful that my family and I have it. I sometimes wonder if countries offering free healthcare lack in modern technology and practices due to a lack in funding, as i'm sure that industry is not generating as much money as it would in the US.

HW #26

Places like England and Canada have universal health care (Sicko)

“Even the poorest people in England are healthier than the richest in the USA” (Sicko)

If you have any pre-existing conditions you will be denied health care in the United States (Sicko)

Health care in the United States is motivated by the desire to make a profit and they look for any way out of providing the people with sufficient health insurance and coverage (Sicko)

The most helpful source to me so far in this unit was defiantly “Sicko,” by Michael Moore. This film educated me on health care and insurance, something i knew nearly nothing about prior. Upon viewing this film I realized how essential health insurance is to nearly everyone. Without it, you cannot pay for medical bills and will likely die of a sickness. Even if you manage to be cured by spending your own money, you will be broke after all of the expenses, since everything is so expensive in the US. I realize that people do not care as much for the sick as others, some feel that they are going to die anyway, so why even bother. I realize that everything is about money, even when it comes to the lives of others. This is bad and Michael Moore was quoted saying that “When it comes to health care profit should not matter.” This is someone’s life we are talking about, it is more important than money. Losing a loved one is very difficult and if the reason is because of money that makes it even worse. I would want to die of natural causes or something that could not have been prevented, not because I could not afford to live.
Something I am very interested in is furthering my understanding of why we do not have universal health care here in the United States. I understand that the moment it was proposed, it was shot down, many years ago, but I do not understand why. The government will still be making their money through the higher taxes so I do not see the reason not to. This is something I would really like to better understand in the last couple weeks of the unit.

HW #25

Precis: Health insurance is very significant in the lives of nearly all human beings. Here in the United States, good health insurance is scarce. People that need health insurance do not receive it, or at least enough of it. If a person is in am accident and loses two fingers, the insurance will only cover the bill for one. In places like Canada or England, there is no health insurance. There are no medical charges. Why is it not this way in the States? Doctors fear that they will not be paid appropriately. This was proven to be untrue, since the Canadian doctors make just as much money as the Americans. In short, the United States health insurance system is corrupt, cheap, and not nearly as affective as it could, and should, be.

“Even the poorest people in England are healthier than the richest in the USA”
This proves that money is not everything and with equal health insurance to all, the entire system is better so despite your wealth n the US, your health insurance will not be better than the equal health insurance of the English.

The family that was successful, but then when health problems occurred it all went downhill and they lost all of their money and had to live with their adult kids. The father was working at age 79.
This proves that the health insurance system is weak and ineffective being that even a wealthy family could not afford to stay healthy and the health insurance was no help at all. Their whole life went down as a result of poor health and poor health insurance.

In the CNN interview, Michael enforced his beliefs, as he seems to do quite often. He backs up his movie and his beliefs with references ad facts. He also feels strongly that Dr. Gupta is incorrect about the effectiveness of the US Health Insurance in comparison to that of others. He claims that the US health insurance system is one of the best and Michael Moore is doubtless in his belief that the doctor in completely incorrect. I personally admire his confidence and determination in his beliefs however I feel that he needs to be more professional and handle himself better. He can still speak his mind and share his opinions; however he should have more self control and be more respectful and mature.

I really enjoyed the movie. It impacted me greatly and made me realize how poor our health insurance really is. After seeing the example where the family lost everything even after being wealthy at a time, I felt awful and I actually did not want to stay here anymore. Then the quote, “Even the poorest people in England are healthier than the richest in the USA.” What is the point of a system like this? If it would make things easier for the people and have them healthier and the doctors would be happier with things being that they will be getting paid by the government and not have to deal with poor health insurance. What is the point if not having universal health care?
